Spring Garden Clean Up Checklist

Now that the snow has fully melted, Edmontonians are itching to get outside and kick off patio season.  

Here's how to spring clean your garden:  

1) TIDY UP YOUR YARD: Do a walk through of your garden to clear debris like dead branches or pick up any garbage that may have blown into your yard over the winter. Replace any planters that may have tipped over and check that all garden beds are in tact. Toss items that are no longer needed or that did not survive the winter months.

2) TRIM PLANTS: If you left your perennials standing for extra protection to weather the winter, you’ll want to trim old, unsightly dead plants. Once you start to see green growth coming up from the soil, cut down old plant stems to ground level. Cut decorative grasses and prune shrubs to promote growth of new shoots.

3) PREPARE GARDEN BEDS: Dig up and remove any annual plants from garden beds or planters. Remove dead leaves, plant debris or weeds. Aerate the soil by using a shovel or rake to loosen up the soil. Add compost or organic fertilizers to the garden bed to improve the quality of the soil. Top up mulch or bark chimps to help keep moisture in and protect plant roots as they get established for the season.

4) ACTIVATE YOUR LAWN: Remove snow mold, leaves or dead grass from your lawn using a rake or power rake. We provided a step by step guide to activate regrowth for a plush green lawn last year. 5) JUST ADD WATER: Turn on your outdoor water and hook up the hose to start watering your garden and lawn early on. You’ll also want to hose down your patio, front porch and driveway to wash away spiderwebs, dirt and dust. Cleaning around your entry ways and in high traffic areas is important as you’ll be spending more time going in and out of the home.
