How to Install a Fire Pit
Long summer nights are upon us and Edmontonians are already making the most of their yard and garden. One of the best ways to maximize outdoor living is to install a fire pit as a place for family and friends to gather long after the sun goes down. A stone fire pit can be a focal point in your backyard or it can be tucked away as an additional seating area styled by comfy chairs, planters and solar lanterns.
Building a fire pit can be easy with the right landscaping supplies. Rockland has fire pit kits from Belgard and Expocrete and all the landscape products you’ll need to get your garden projects done.
Here’s how to install a stone fire pit using the Expocrete Stackstone Fire Pit Kit:
1) Determine the best location for the fire pit. Ensure the fire pit is at least 10 feet away from trees, bushes, garden sheds, fences and/or your home. Use measuring tape to identify the right spot keeping in mind 45” for the diameter of the fire pit.
2) Prepare the excavation site by identifying where you would like the centre of your fire pit to be. Measure 22.5 inches from the centre point and indicate the circumference of your excavation site with marking paint. Pro-tip: Consider adding a border to your fire pit using stone pavers or decorative rock. Take the width of the stone paver into account to calculate the diameter of the fire pit perimeter.
3) Remove sod and/or soil to a depth of 6 inches. Fill excavation site with road crush to 4 inches in depth keeping the base 2 inches below garden grade. Use a hand tamper to compact the base and ensure the base is level using a leveling bar. 4) Measure 22.5 inches from the centre point to lay the first row of stones. Alternate placing Stackstone Standard and Stackstone T.R. Stone for the base row. Ensure stones are placed tightly together. Each row will have 8 stones.
5) For the second and third row, alternate between the same two stones placing the stone on the joint of the two stones below to strengthen the structure of the fire pit. Ensure the stones are straight and there are no gaps between them.
6) Place the top row alternating between the Stacktone Coping and the Stackstone T.R. stones. Place the grill on top.
7) Add firewood and friends for a memorable night in your backyard!
