Creating New Holiday Traditions Outside
The holiday season is looking a little different this year as we navigate these new, uncertain times. With guidelines changing regularly, it's safe to say that we'll be spending a lot of time at home with our immediate families. Since the backyard is an extension of our homes, why not venture outside as a fun activity to embrace some new traditions and create memorable experiences together!
Here are 3 ways to make the most of time at home and enjoy the holidays:
Get Active
There are so many outdoor winter activities you can do outside that don’t require a ton of equipment or help from anyone such as sledding, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing. Getting the kids outside to build a snowman or play in a park is an easy way to burn off some energy (and all the holiday baking!).
Skating and playing hockey are a fave for both kids and adults so if you can’t find a nearby rink, consider building your own skating rink in the backyard! We have a guide on how to create an ice rink in your backyard in 7 steps that we shared last winter. It may take a few days but once you have the ice rink ready, you’ll be able to enjoy it all season!

Gather Around the Fire Pit
After spending so much time at home, you might want to switch up where you spend your evenings or afternoons by having an outdoor fire. You can enjoy your fire table year-round in their covered patio space, on your driveway or even in your garage with the door open!
If you have a fire pit in your yard already, shovel a path right to your fire pit and pull up some chairs to make memories around the fire. We have 7 tips to help you enjoy an outdoor fire pit this winter! The kids will love this new tradition of roasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate under cozy blankets. Mulled wine or hot cider for the adults, please! ;)

Dine Outside
With a fire pit and possibly a skating rink in the yard, you'll want to bring out the snacks & warm beverages. Picnics don't have to only be reserved for summer!
You can set up cozy, outdoor spaces by getting a heat lamp or two for your front porch or deck. Just dust the snow off any chairs and benches and dress in your best winter gear. In case you missed it, we shared more tips on how to create an outdoor living space you can enjoy year-round which will help you make the most of the season.
We’ve been thrown a curve ball this year but with these ideas to make the most of time at home during the holidays, we hope you can find ways to adapt and create good memories with your family.
Happy holidays from the team at Rockland!
