5 Landscaping Trends for 2021
It might be the dead of winter but Edmonton landscaping season will be here before you know it! (Here’s hoping anyway!) Most landscaping companies are already meeting starting to book up for spring and summer projects so it’s time to get inspired and begin planning the landscaping design for your yard.
Given the current environment and restrictions on travel, people are homebound and are choosing to invest in home improvement which includes landscaping. As we’re spending more time at home, there’s a big focus on making the yard a liveable, enjoyable space as an extension of the home.
There are many landscaping trends for 2021 that we’re seeing right now and Rockland has been busy getting all the best quality landscaping supplies into the yard to help you turn your vision into a reality!
Here are the top 5 trends in landscaping this year:
1) Eco-friendly Landscape Designs
Landscapers are using more native plants in their landscaping as plants that are native to a specific climate and environment will be easier to grow and require less water and overall maintenance. Native plants often support local ecosystems and may attract bees and butterflies. Other aspects of an eco-friendly design is incorporating the use of rain barrels or smart watering systems to save on water consumption.
2) Multi-functional Spaces
Since we’re living our lives primarily at home, with in some cases a full house, it’s handy to have more space outdoors to serve for activities you would otherwise do inside. Landscaping designs are creating multi-functional spaces to provide room for hobbies to accommodate the whole family. We’re seeing gazebos and pergolas with outdoor pizza ovens and TV screens; water features to create a peaceful yoga and meditation corner and mini golf. Kids and adults alike are getting space to play and relax in the yard!
3) More Focus on The Front Yard
The front yard is getting a bit more attention this year as we are tending to visit safely at a distance on our front porch or in our driveway. Whether it’s creating a front patio space for a bistro set, adding a retaining wall bench seat or creating a focal point with beautiful boulders, landscapers are creating welcoming spaces and adding major curb appeal to homes.
4) Low Maintenance Gardens
While we’re spending more time AT home, we don’t necessarily want to spend more time working ON the home. Maintenance free or low maintenance gardens have been a long-standing landscaping trend as most people want to reduce time spent mowing, watering and weeding. Oftentimes, homeowners are opting to remove their lawn in favour of rock gardens, stone patios , mulch and even synthetic grass. In case you missed it, we shared the pros and cons of using mulch or decorative rock.
5) Edible Gardens
Gardens don’t have to only include pretty flowers. They can serve a double purpose by providing beautiful greenery as well as a bountiful harvest! Growing herbs, vegetables and fruit is a landscaping trend that carried over from last year as people had more time to become hobby gardeners than ever before. Gardening and growing fresh produce is not only fun to do with kids and a good way to destress but you can enjoy the fruits of your labour all season! Rockland carries top soil, compost and gardening tools to help you get started.
